Pizzoccheri Recipe

OVERVIEW

This project explores the translation of analytical and design elements into visual form, moving from photographic observation to pictogrammatic representation. Centered on the traditional Italian recipe of Pizzoccheri, it transforms ingredients, actions, and sensory impressions into distinctive shapes. As one of my earliest graphic design projects, it holds particular significance, marking the beginning of a methodological approach that shaped my work in the years that followed.

About the project

The project originates from a study of how visual language can bridge the gap between documentation and abstraction. Starting from the preparation of Pizzoccheri, each component of the recipe—its ingredients, gestures, and tactile sensations—was distilled into visual symbols. The primary ingredient, cabbage, was first examined through photographic experimentation, serving as the foundation for subsequent graphic simplification.

This early exploration became a key milestone in developing my long-term design methodology, influencing how I approach visual synthesis and conceptual translation.

The main representation mode that has followed the exploration is the pictogrammatic, of both ingredients and tools.

Various actions—such as kneading—have been translated into textures, while an additional texture has been developed from the mix of sensations that the dish evokes.

The final artifact, which brought together all the preceding explorations, consisted of a stop-motion video that recreates the entire recipe process.
