Kabel Specimen

OVERVIEW

This specimen explores Kabel, the typeface designed by German designer Rudolf Koch and released by the Gebrüder Klingspor foundry in Frankfurt in 1927. The project highlights the font’s distinctive aesthetic—rooted in basic geometric shapes yet enriched with elegant, calligraphic nuances—through a carefully considered use of color.

About the project

About the project

The intent of the specimen is to draw attention to the visual qualities that define Kabel’s character. By emphasizing its geometric construction and subtle expressive details, the design showcases how the typeface balances structural rigor with refined personality. The chosen color palette reinforces this duality, enhancing the viewer’s perception of Kabel’s form, rhythm, and historical identity.

In the first two spreads, the specimen presents the complete glyph set, followed by the typeface’s background and an initial comparison between sizes, weights, and alternate characters.
